About

Along with her elite professional training and career, Karine Stone always works passionately to share music in her community, through her innovative performances, unique approach to teaching, and work as an arts advocate. She began her violin study at the age of two with Joan Reuning and many early teachers of the Suzuki Method, including Lynn Baughman, Hiroko Driver, and Shinichi Suzuki himself. Throughout her pre-professional and college studies (Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Eastman School of Music), she was privileged to study with Nel Gotkovsky, Charles Castleman, Illya Kahler, Glen Dicterow, Lisa Kim and many of the most outstanding musicians in the world.

Karine’s performance career spans work on three continents, and includes professional positions in the Syracuse Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Heidelberg Schlossfestspiele Orchester, the Santo Domingo Music Festival Orchestra, the Todi Opera Orchestra, Greater Buffalo Opera, and more. She has performed frequently at the Skeneateles Chamber Music Festival, the Scranton Bach Festival, and. Bravo Colorado.

Throughout her thirty plus years of teaching, Karine always brings her skills, knowledge, and experience to her teaching,  continually adapting to the needs of each student, and ardently supporting them in music and in life. The same holds true for her conducting which began with a small community orchestra. She absolutely loved seeing children and adults experience the joy of performing. Moving forward, she served as the Music Director of the Eastman Youth Chamber Soloists, Principal Guest Conductor of the Finger Lakes Symphony, Music Director of the New Horizons String and Symphonic Orchestras, and as a conducting fellow of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra.

Combining her teaching, performing, and conducting experience, Karine founded and served as Executive and Artistic Director of Gibbs & Main, a non-profit chamber music group, dedicated to commissioning new music, performing in underserved communities, and presenting music to children. She designed the Kidsemble Concert Series, innovative and interactive performances for young children and families, in which they made instruments, participated in the performance, and experienced an “instrument petting zoo” after each concert.

Karine currently resides in Tennessee, where she teaches and performs locally, and where she maintains an active virtual presence, making her ability to reach students limitless.

WHY MUSIC MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Studying music is more than mastering an instrument, learning repertoire, and gaining a knowledge of theory and history. It is learning skills and concepts, having experiences, and interacting with others in a way that enriches your life. It is the process of discovering yourself! It is the discipline to push your own mental, physical, and emotional limits to know the joy of creating something beautiful, something that is uniquely yours.

IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU

I strive to adapt my teaching to the abilities and goals of each student, and to incorporate listening, reading, technique, and repertoire in a way that gives them a balanced musical knowledge, the confidence of solid technique, and an avenue for creative expression. I encourage my students to have reasonable goals so that we create a plan for achieving them together. Facilitating that means that I factor in age, previous experience, and each student's musical goals, and that we decide together how best to achieve those goals. If you would like to book a lesson and don't see anything in my availability that fits your schedule, message me! We will find a time that's convenient.

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY

Communication is key for us to work effectively, and I believe that learning is a partnership. I try to give them a sense not of "how much" or "how long" they need to practice, but rather what it will take to accomplish what they want. We make a plan together, and the plan will change, evolve, and adapt as lessons progress. For children, parental involvement on some level is key. For any student, family life, school, career, and scheduling need to be factored into what is realistic. I am ready to work at a pace that fits the needs of each student, and always happy to receive their feedback. Big dreams are accomplished one step at a time, taking the first one puts you on the path to success!!!

PRACTICE HELP IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE

Finish a lesson and can't remember something? Send me a message and I will remind you! Wondering if you are "getting it" or need some feedback? Message me a short video clip of your practice and I will send you comments. Not sure if you are buying the right music or supplies, ask me! You are not entirely on your own between lessons, I am here to help!

TEACHING MATERIALS

Instruments music, equipment, recordings, etc. are unique to each student's needs. It's not one size fits all. That is something I discuss on an individual basis before the first lesson. If you would like to book a lesson and don't see anything in my availability that fits your schedule, message me! We will find a time that's convenient. We can discuss needed materials by chat before we get started.

Instrument

If you already have an instrument and bow, we can use those. If you have never played before it's important for us discuss options. I can help you find local resources, make decisions about renting v. owning, and how to have the instruments set up. I don't recommend buying an instrument online without help. I can guide you to reputable sources if a local instrument store is not available.

Music

At  a basic levels, students will need method books (I like Essential Elements, Suzuki, and supplement that based on the student). I also give my own studies for left hand and for bow.

At more advanced levels, we need to choose scale, exercise, and etude books (Carl Flesch, Fiorillo, Kreutzer, etc.), as well as music from the standard repertoire of Solo Bach, Violin or Viola Concertos and Sonatas. It's good to study music from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Contempory styles.

At every level I encourage my students to incorporate music they want to play... fiddle, jazz, Latin, pop music, and sacred music are all wonderful supplements to the traditional violin and viola repertoire.

Equipment

1- Shoulder rests come in many types and sizes. Each student is unique and we need to find something that fits you! Options include Kuhn (especially for smaller sized instruments), Wolf (the Forte Secondo model is curved, both can be bent to fit the student's shoulder). There are many others as well. 2- Sturdy music stand for practice. 3- Intelli Metro Tuner (metronome and tuner in one.) See resources below. 4- Rosin and cleaning cloth. 5- Lesson and Practice journal (I highly recommend this and can help you structure it! This keeps you on track in between lessons, and gives you important points to come back to. Technique learned once is going to be applied many times, so having good notes saves time! (If you are ordering music and supplies online, important links are below.)

JOHNSON STRING INSTRUMENTS https://www.johnsonstring.com/ (An excellent resource for music books, sheet music, shoulder rests, metronomes, etc. Also one of the few places I would recommend purchasing from online. That said, make sure to get guidance before making the purchase! I can help!
