About

My name is Thomas and I play the trombone. I love playing music with all sorts of people. It's led me around the world playing in many interesting groups and situations. I can't wait to meet you and get to know you, I know we'll have a great time!

Dallas-based One O'Clock trombonist Thomas Laubhan loves connecting with people through music. He loves the wide range of emotions and experiences that music conveys and how it can connect people from all cultures and backgrounds. He always tries to connect with his audiences on a deep level as he shares his love for music and for the people around him. His goal is to inspire and excite others through all of the music he makes.

His love of playing earned him the opportunity to travel around Texas and around the world playing with all sorts of musical acts. He earned a spot playing trombone for two semesters in the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band, with whom he played with notable guests such as Maria Schneider, Gary Smulyan, and Regina Carter. The band also traveled to New York City to compete in the inaugural Jack Rudin Jazz Championship at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where they earned a spot in the finals and won numerous awards including Outstanding Trombone Section. In his professional career he has made recordings with Rebel Alliance Jazz Ensemble, featuring guests such as Louis Dowdeswell, Roger Ingram, Bobby Shew, and Tom Harrell. He earned a spot as lead trombone in the inaugural Texas State Guard Jazz Orchestra and works as a freelance trombonist in the DFW area.

Thomas Laubhan graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the University of Texas at Arlington and is currently pursuing his master's degree in jazz studies with a concentration in performance at the University of North Texas and studying with Nick Finzer. While attending both schools he has received various competitive scholarships and awards, such as the Burkholder Memorial Scholarship and Undergraduate Research Internship Grant from UTA and the Competitive Jazz Trombone Scholarship from UNT.

Every student will get a custom-tailored lesson plan formulated to help the student grow and reach their goals. I am very interested in trombone pedagogy and am passionate about using these ideas in a clear, practical way to give the student clear goals and expectations. I will draw from the standard trombone repertoire and use different ear training and theory exercises to give the student a strong foundation that will be useful for any future endeavors.
