About

Tubist Steven Needham is known for his clear sound, versatility, and energy in performance. Steven is in high demand as a performer and educator throughout the U.S.

Steven has shared the stage with some of the finest musicians in the world sitting as Guest Principal Tuba with orchestras such as the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet Orchestra, New World Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony, Brazos Valley Symphony, and Las Vegas Philharmonic amongst others. As a chamber musician Steven is a member of the Magnolia City Brass Band and Gulf Coast Brass Quintet, he has also performed extensively with the Houston Symphony Brass Quintet, New Mexico Philharmonic Brass Quintet, Enchantment Brass, Texas Brass, and Richard Brown Brass Ensemble. During the summers Steven has held fellowship positions with the Napa Valley Music Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, Mostly Modern Music Festival, and Texas Music Festival.

Steven completed his undergraduate studies in Tuba Performance at the University of New Mexico. He received his Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory, where he received the Yale Brody Memorial Scholarship and Richard Hart/Eugene Sheffers Scholarship and continued additional graduate studies at the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. His primary teachers include David Kirk, Mark Barton, David Fedderly, and Dr. Richard A. White.

Committed to educating the next generation of tubists, Steven has become one the most successful and highly sought after low brass teachers. He currently operates theĀ  most competitive private low brass studio in the greater Houston area, and is highly sought after as a guest clinician, coach and masterclass instructor. Many of his students have gone on to receive scholarships from top music schools, and they continuously place in honor ensembles and competitions at the regional, state, national, and international level.
