About

Born amid the cornfields of Northern Illinois, “Tall Sam” shucked his agricultural roots for the allure of the trombone at age ten. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he quickly established himself in NYC as an educator, arranger, and trombonist. Over the last 10 years, "Tall Sam" has worked with over 30,000 students in a variety of contexts across the United States. He has served as the Director of Education for Playbook and worked closely with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People and Webop programs. As a performer, he has joined Jon Batiste and Stay Human at the Newport Jazz Festival and previously toured with Sammy Miller and The Congregation.

Teaching music is not a "one size fits all" endeavor. Musical development, taste, and even our physical bodies, play a role in who we are as individual musicians. I want to teach you how to find your voice on your instrument. Through a mindful and fun approach to music learning, I will not only help you improve on your instrument, but provide a deeper understanding of music itself, leading to a more meaning and engaging musical experience!
