About

Lydia received a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Northern Iowa in May 2019. At UN, she was a student of Dr. Angeleita Floyd, performing with top ensembles, chamber groups and more. Some highlights include world premieres of works by Michael Daugherty, Adam Schoenberg, and Daniel Bukvich, recording a CD with the UNI Wind Ensemble, performing second flute in the UNI Opera's performance of "Hansel and Gretyl," and performing as a piccolo soloist with the TAIKO-West African Drum Ensemble.  She is fortunate to have international playing and teaching experience, including a 2016 Northern Iowa Wind Symphony tour in Northern Italy and 2016 fall semester abroad in Thessaloniki, Greece. Lydia is active as a teacher and clinician in Northeast and Central Iowa, including positions as flute teacher at the Boys and Girls Club of Waterloo and maintaining a small private studio. She has performed in masterclasses for William Bennett, Ian Clarke, Alena (Lugovkina) Walentin, Claudia Anderson, Jill Felber, and  Hannah Leffler. She previously studied with Ms. Mary Peterson.

Lydia finds balance with an active music career by pursuing passions in international relations and the vibrant nonprofit sector. She is a 2019 Global Ties US Emerging Leader for international exchange programming. She is currently employed at Iowa State University in student services.

I am excited to work with my students in an engaging and holistic teaching style. Art is informed by our personalities, experiences, and emotions. Music is an incredible opportunity to explore ourselves and the world around us, while engaging with great repertoire and colleagues.

We will work together to set goals, progress markers, and celebrate the completion of these goals. I am here for you - I want to help you grow and explore this wonderful instrument.

University of Northern Iowa, BM, Flute Performance (class of 2019) National Flute Association

I teach with several focus areas. We will work together to build a curriculum based on your goals and level of incoming experience. Generally, I utilize a combination of Rubank and Trevor Wye methods,  etudes, and solo repertoire. Each student will utilize the Trevor Wye Practice Book no. 1, regardless of experience. You will also be required to learn and memorize scales. Check out the other areas of emphasis below:

Etudes - You will learn new etudes weekly to work through a specific idea or technique. These will be progressive, and an opportunity to build technique, artistic interpretation, confidence and sight reading abilities.

Scales - We must learn to walk before we can run. Scales are the foundational skill you will use to build technique.

Technique - You will learn finger patterns, articulations exercises, and more that will challenge you to grow!

Repertoire - You will learn major flute repertoire from a variety of periods and styles. You will become familiar with the history and great canon of flute music through studying and engaging with these pieces. You will also perform these pieces and gain confidence sharing your art with loved ones.
