About

Born in Indianapolis, Jennifer Gallegos began playing flute in church with a group of lively musicians. She learned new music playing by ear and harmonizing and improvising over melodies. Her formal training began under Loretta Contino at Jordan School of the Arts at Butler University at age 11, and continued her studies with Alice Akins at the Center for Performing Arts in Indianapolis. Gallegos trained with Kyril Maag and later, Rebecca Maag, at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati in Flute Performance (1987-1990). She received her BA in Education from Belmont Abbey College, (Summa cum laude 1998), and earned her Graduate Certification in Kodály Music (Magna cum laude, New York University) in 2001.

Since 1990, Gallegos has maintained a busy career as a freelance performer and teacher throughout the United States and the Caribbean. Her versatility and playing style has led the way to play for Grammy Award Winner Nestor Torres, Gato Barbieri, Carol Wincenc, Michel Debost, and Amy Porter. Recent recordings of Gallegos can be heard on Echoes of Your Heart (2016), 500 Years (2010), Dance of the Brujas (2008), and El Viajero (2006). At the Moonlight Jazz Festival on St. John in the USVI, Gallegos opened for Nestor Torres and Gato Barbieri in 2005 and 2007, and she continues to perform chamber music, large concerts, and festivals throughout the United States and Caribbean.

In 2016, Gallegos founded Bon Temps, a duo featuring Impressionist music, Early American Jazz, and French café melodies composed through the turn of the 20th century. Bon Temps takes the most adored songs of this era, motifs inspired by tonalities and colors from the Far East, flavored with the new sound of Jazz, and weaves a tapestry of emotion, luminosity and textured soundscapes which warm the soul and transports the listener to another time and place,

Gallegos is a freelance artist, studio musician, and featured performer with Classical Music Indy, Desert Echoes Flute Project, and owns and operates Chica Fluta Studio. Gallegos serves as the Director of Orchestras at BASIS Peoria in Arizona, leading masterclasses, sectionals, and adjudicates regional and state festivals and competitions.

Thoughts On Private Lessons

Learning to play flute is not easy and learning to play it well as a beginning, developing, or advanced player can be a slow and arduous process. A good teacher makes a difference in how quickly you learn to play your instrument, and their instruction is key to developing good habits and techniques that will make you a better player.

Approach

Through individually-developed lessons, I work with each student using solo-based repertoire as the basis for instruction in all elements of music, including history, theory, interpretation, and technique. Scales and études are approached musically, and serve to underscore mastery of the repertoire. Duets are standard in every lesson; they are always fun to play and playing with a 2nd voice helps increase focus on intonation. My students get the benefit of a professional flutist, an active performer, a teaching specialist: modeling good practices, giving feedback and encouragement, sharing secret techniques, and mentoring their personal development as a musician.
