About

Born in England in 1963, Gila (formerly known as Gillian) Carcas has composed well over fifty pieces of music, ranging from solo and small chamber works to full orchestral pieces and a chamber opera.  Compositional studies were undertaken with Sebastian Forbes, John Casken, Erika Fox and with Peter Manning for electroacoustic music. Qualifications include a PhD in Composition from Durham University, which was received in 1996. Gila has received various commissions, which have included a setting of 18th century English feminist poems, a piece for Chinese pipa as well as choral music and an assortment of others.  Performances of her music have been given by many artists and ensembles.

In the past, Gila has taught theory and composition at the Royal College of Music in London and also spent a year as Visiting Lecturer of Composition at Southampton University.  She has many years' teaching experience of music to students of all ages.  Since moving to Israel in 2004, she continues to teach privately, including lessons for piano, violin, music theory and composition.

Performances of Gila's music in 2017 have included pieces in New York, the Ukraine and Australia.  She recently released a CD of some of her chamber music entitled "Transformations."

My teaching style is tailored to each student, depending on his or her unique personality, interests and needs.  While there is flexibility in how I approach students, I have high standards and I make sure that I cover the appropriate technical and theoretical knowledge thoroughly.

PhD in Music Composition from Durham University,1996.
BMus (Hons) Music from Surrey University, 1990.
BA (Hons) History from Southampton University, 1984.

For instrumental lessons, my teaching of scales, arpeggios etc. follows the requirements of the ABRSM graded system.  While I am essentially classically oriented in repertoire, which I believe gives the fullest grounding for technique and musicality, I am certainly flexible towards incorporating other styles of music eg jazz.  My theory teaching  experience ranges from absolute beginners to post in-depth Bach chorale writing and advanced harmony eg Neopolitan 6ths and I have many old ABRSM theory exam papers from Grade 1 to 8.  Finally, my approach to composition is both in giving structure assignments designed to expand a student's compositional experience and techniques as well as encouraging students to explore their own particular interests with help and guidance.
