About

Born in New York City and raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Evan Kesel is a 2020 graduate of Berklee College of Music where he was a four-year recipient of a National Performance Tour Scholarship. As a Paiste Endorsed Artist, Kesel is confident in his approach to holistic drumming and drum education – featuring mindfulness and body awareness. At Berklee, Evan’s teachers included Mark Walker, Dave DiCenso, and Jackie Santos. He credits his early teacher, Jamie Decato, for steering him toward a career in live and recorded music. Evan has played throughout the country and in the New England area with groups across a broad range of genres, including jazz, musical theater, rock, country and Americana. Evan is currently recording and teaching from his studio in Portsmouth, NH.

Evan has a great respect for the traditonal pedogogy of the drum set but also a physical challenge faced by all drummers, the intersection between comfort and technique. He has studied the spiritual side of the instrument along with the traditonal with teachers like Yoron Israel and Dave Dicenso. With his father, Tom Kesel he studied the relationship of Bass and Drums and what it means to participate in music with a band. His talents behind the band stand, and in the gigging community also helped him achieve scholarship status at Berklee College of Music.

Berklee College of Music Graduate class of 2020, Performance Tour Scholarship Recipient, 2015 Berklee Funk Fusion All-Star Performer. Drummer with artists and producers around the world.

Evan utilizes online tools like Youtube videos and playlists, which he has personally archived thousands of minutes of footage from around the internet for students to watch and prepare along with. He also uses songs and music from his and his parents childhoods, along with the students favorite music to assist in teaching the lessons of the working musician. The use of physical written out rhythms is also very important but utilized along with real world examples, these important foundational skills are easily internalized.
