About
Erik is a freelance woodwind doubler in the Orlando, FL area. He plays second clarinet with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, performs with numerous touring Broadway shows and other local theater productions, and has been a member of Disney World's Candlelight Orchestra since 2003. He has performed with the Orlando Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra, the Sarasota Opera, and the Indianapolis Symphony. He currently teaches private lessons and woodwind technique classes for several colleges in the area, including the University of Central Florida and Rollins College.
Erik has taught students of all ages and levels, from 5th grade to adult and beginner to college music major. He has been teaching private lessons for over 20 years, and many of his students have won spots in Florida's All-State ensembles, as well as the local youth orchestra and All-County ensembles. Some of Erik's students have gone on to study at Indiana University, Florida State University, and Bard College, among other schools.
Erik holds a Masters in Woodwind Doubling from the Eastman School of Music, and a Bachelors in Music Performance (Clarinet and Oboe) from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN.
I am a firm believer that success on an instrument comes when the student wants it, and that success is defined differently for each student's goals. No matter how basic or advanced the goal is, there are always good things to find about any performance, and always things to work on. I find that a negative approach, including yelling, insulting, or shaming the student, rarely leads to better results, and as such I definitely focus on a more positive approach to motivating students to set new goals and reach them.
I'm happy to do short-term lessons with specific goals - working on solo festival pieces, audition music for ensembles/college/contests, or any other specific goals. While all of that can be a part of a long-term lessons too, I tend to focus a lot more on big picture issues when I have the time - solid rhythm, good fingering habits, effective practice techniques, and how a better understanding of music theory and style can lead to a better understanding of appropriate phrasing and articulation.
