About
I'm a Metropolitan Opera baritone and vocal technician dedicated to helping you find the most powerful, beautiful, and refined sound your vocal instrument can make, then channel this into compelling, heartfelt performances.
As a performing artist, I sing leading baritone roles with the world’s most important opera houses and orchestras, including the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Carnegie Hall, the Salzburg Festival, Grand Théatre du Généve, Théâtre du Châtelet, and the BBC Symphony, with broadcast and recording credits including the BBC, Arte TV, PBS, NPR, Radio France, RAI, Innova, Erato, and ORF. My repertoire of over 60 principal roles includes both classic and contemporary works, with vocal demands that embody a broad range of musical styles: opera, musical theater, jazz, rock, and everything in between.
I hold degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where I was a protégé of the influential voice pedagogue and author Richard Miller. I co-authored articles with Miller on vocal acoustics and received research grants from the McNair Foundation and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. I regularly teach workshops and masterclasses for academic institutions throughout the world, including Mannes School of Music, Tel Aviv University Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, Rice University Sheperd School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, University of Texas, and San Diego State University. I am a core faculty member of the National Theater Institute and National Music Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Center, and I've also served on the guest faculties of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute and Mannes School of Music.
MISSION
I believe that singing is the most beautiful thing that can be done with the human body.
A primal scream in filigree. A delicate and powerful connection from one soul to another. This is the premise from which we approach our journey in this studio. No matter your stylistic orientation or experience level, we will engage with singing as an element of personal empowerment, an athletic discipline, and with a shared duty to bring more beauty into this world.
APPROACH
I've spent my entire career so far under the mentorship of two influential vocal technicians: Richard Miller, who gave me my technical foundation, taught me how to teach, and with whom I lectured on vocal acoustics, conducted voice research, and co-authored scholarly articles; and Patricia McCaffrey, who has helped me continue to develop my technique and navigate every stage of my performing career. My teaching approach combines Miller's basis in acoustics and physiology with McCaffrey's emphasis on efficiency, flexibility, and immediate results, both of which have produced some of the most celebrated classical and pop vocalists of our time. My other teachers include Anne Sofie von Otter, Sir Thomas Allen, Mark Schnaible, Vladimir Braun, and Sir Donald McIntyre - each has been instrumental in shaping my artistic and technical practice.
WHO I CAN HELP
As a vocal technician, I enjoy working with voice users in a wide variety of musical styles and experience levels. I also work with professional voice users such as teachers, public intellectuals, and TV presenters to help optimize their speaking voices. My students include Metropolitan Opera soloists, pop singers, synagogue cantors, university voice professors, cabaret performers, and professional speakers.
WHERE I TEACH
I teach private sessions on Zoom and in-person from studios in Manhattan and 20 minutes outside of Manhattan in Northern NJ. I also serve on the faculty of the National Theater Institute at the historic Eugene O'Neill Center in Waterford, CT, and teach masterclasses at universities and conservatories worldwide.
