About

Bodie Pfost recently earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Historical Performance at Boston University. He previously earned an MA in Musicology from the University of Oregon and a BA in Music Performance from Humboldt State University. Bodie balances a multitude of musical interests, from performance of music  from the Renaissance to modern jazz, to reading and writing about music, to transcribing, engraving, and arranging music for a variety of ensembles. Bodie has played in jazz bands, salsa bands, and reggae bands, and he also served as Principal Trombone with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra for three years. He has performed  with pop stars like Wayne Newton and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Recently, Bodie has been pursuing performance opportunities using his bass voice, particularly in choral music. His doctoral program focused on the study and performance of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods using appropriate instruments, techniques, venues, and styles.

Bodie's teaching style combines an understanding of the musical, historical, and cultural contexts of the music being studied with technical capabilities that come from putting the time in in the practice room. The goals of the student are assessed and a curriculum to best achieve those goals is designed. Bodie passes along insights from 30 years of playing the trombone, 20 years of which were in professional situations.

I prefer to design a custom curriculum for each student. That being said, a few I have previously used are Bordogni's Vocalises by Johannes Rochut, Jazz Conceptions by Jim Snidero, and Clef Studies for Trombone by Vladislav Blazhevich.
