Cell Weaves on 8 Shafts

About Cell Weaves on 8 Shafts

A simple repeat threading on paired shafts creates 4 “cells” which can be woven as Lace, Deflected Double Weave, Honeycomb, and Monks Belt! Weave a unique sampler that includes all these structures; play with bold color effects, and gain confidence in fabric design.

This on-loom workshop requires an 8 shaft table or floor loom, and an adventuresome spirit. Threading guidelines will be provided - you apply the cell sizes and colors! Work (play!) at your own loom, and learn from other class member’s results!

Gamp design and warping instructions will be provided before the class starts. Three 2-hour classes will guide weavers through the different structures possible on the threadings. The last 2-hour class will be a sharing time for weavers to share photos of their gamps. Between classes and for one month after the workshop, communication will occur on a private Groups.io that I will host.

The capacity for this class is 18 students.

Class Materials

• Pre-warped 8 shaft floor or table loom - jack looms are best so unbalanced tie ups can be used.
• Warp yarn - 5/2, 8/2, or 10/2 cotton, rayon, or tencel (can be mixed) in 5 colors that work together nicely.
• Weft yarn in a variety of sizes and colors. Lots of weft choices will be encouraged!

Age Range

Teens and Adults

Skill Level

Beginner - must be able to warp your loom independently.

Martha Town

Martha Town

I have been weaving for 40+ years, and am a member of Michigan League of Handweavers, HGA, Complex Weavers, and several local guilds. I am a self taught weaver who has benefited from many workshops and conferences over the years. I earned the Handweavers Guild of America Certificate of Excellence - Level 1 in 1986. As a fan of twill structures, I quickly moved to multi-shaft weaving and currently weave on an 8 shaft Baby Wolf, 8 shaft Gilmore, and a 16 shaft AVL Compu-Dobby. I love to weave functional items for the home, as well as scarves, and yardage. My work has been accepted in HGA’s Small Expressions Exhibits and Convergence Yardage exhibits. I have won several awards, including Complex Weavers awards at MLH Conferences and Midwest Conferences.
